The state-designated Black Scenic River has long been a favorite of paddlers who navigate the bottomland forest to experience excellent birding and wildlife watching opportunities. Tupelo gum, pine, and ancient bald cypress trees tower overhead. From the Black River Cypress Preserve, paddlers choose one of three launch sites to explore the wide-open Black River and the mysterious cleared canoe trail through the “narrows,” a long, meandering thin stretch of the river.
