Guest Speaker – Lee Brockington – Early History of the Black River

Guided by history consultant Lee Brockington, participants will walk adjacent to the Black River and learn about one of the oldest rivers east of the Mississippi. Early colonists, plantations, and Francis Marion’s guerilla warfare during the Revolution will be discussed as part of the Black River’s natural and cultural history.
The hike will begin at 9:00 at the Swampside Tract of the Black River Cypress Preserve (16368 County Line Road, Andrews, SC) where guests will get an orientation to the Black River and the Cypress Preserve. Then we will drive over to the Peninsula Tract (91 Hammock Road, Andrews, SC) and spend our time walking along the levees beside the Black River and into the hardwood swamp on grassy trails and crushed limestone trails. The walking is easy and we will be out on the trails until 12:00 when the group will go back to the picnic shelter for the conclusion.
Wear comfortable clothes that are suited for the weather of the day, wear closed toe shoes (no sandals or slides), bring plenty of water and a picnic lunch that can be eaten at the end of the program if you wish.
Cost: $10 per person payable to Lee Brockington upon arrival. Cash or check accepted.
